Kankan, also written Concan, belongs to the rummy family. You build melds out of your hand: sets of the same rank, or runs of consecutive cards in one suit. Every turn you draw one card and discard another, so the hand changes constantly without ever growing.
The opening rule is what gives the game its shape. Your first meld does not count until it reaches fifty-one points, so you are caught between waiting until the opening is complete while heavy cards pile up in your hand, and going down at the minimum and showing your opponents what you hold.

A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits, such as three queens. A run is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as the five, six and seven of hearts.
